One out of seven human beings living in the south in 1860 were black slaves and the property of whites who could take their children and sell them, whip them, rape them, and kill them if they fought back. Perfectly legal. Roughly two of six southern white families were involved in owning slaves while the remaining four were white families who did not own a business that would profit from slavery, did not own slaves, were not acting against slavery, and many supporting racism became traitors and fought against the United States to preserve slavery. If the civil war was fought today six and a half million people would die.
